This mechanics origin goes way back to '21 with the Octopus Demos I released around that time. From the video you see here, it gives the player a boost in momentum. I'll see if I can find some old footage of the Speed Ring's in Octopus and post it here for comparison.

August 1, 2026: FOUND IT! The video above is from the old Octopus build. I thought this addition was apart the Octopus 2 release, but it was in the Pre-Octopus folder (?), perhaps the folder is misnamed.
